Yelp
Dr. Wong was very patient answering my many, many questions leading up to cataract surgery on each eye several months apart (my choice due to travel). He is a busy professional but is also kind & clearly passionate about what he does. I wanted laser & was glad to pay out-of-pocket but he saved me $1000's by telling me I would get just as good results without it & I did, so add ethical to that list as well. The initial exam is fast but the follow-up education/paperwork takes awhile but it's because they want to ensure clear understanding. Last but not least, having the procedures at his facility were so much more convenient than an outpatient surgical facility & I believe safer because his well-trained surgical team has worked together for a long time. The 'prep' team is reassuring & fully understand patient concerns. The front office staffers are responsive & well-informed. Thank you. P.S. I want to add Dr. Wong corrected me for distance AND close vision which is tricky because I was so near-sighted but could still read fine print – he was able to do this without specialty lenses. Remarkably, I was glasses/contact lens free after 50+ years, paying just my standard Medicare costs & medications not covered. My procedures were in 2019. I now have some cell regrowth – common after any cataract surgery and has nothing to do with surgeon skill or lens choice – that can be corrected via laser (yag laser posterior capsulotomy). Also,on my initial exam, Dr. Wong discovered a retinal issue of which I was totally unaware. I was referred to a retina specialist before getting the ok to proceed. Sorry this is so long but this is the kind of info I was looking for prior to my cataract surgery.
Yelp
I recently had cataract surgery with Dr. Shannon Wong of Austin Eye and could not have been happier. The whole experience was smooth and easy. Everyone I dealt with was kind and friendly. The whole procedure and cost options were explained thoroughly prior to surgery. The surgery itself was quick and painless, and, happily, I had no discomfort following the procedure. This experience was the polar opposite of my first cataract surgery which left me in pain for 4 days and cost me 3 times as much. I highly recommend Austin Eye. Everyone is thorough and professional as well as kind and supportive…a truly superior experience!

During the COVID lockdown my son & I had gone to Big Bend National Park for hiking, however a COVID case 2 weeks earlier had shut the park for everything except driving through the park on the paved road & a couple of hikes in the Basin. When we arrived in the Basin, there was only one other car – a sight unusual in the extreme. There was a park volunteer who usually gives information to hordes of visitors but, since we were it, we spoke at length about all manner of things. Somehow the topic drifted to vision & he mentioned he had had cataract surgery done at Austin Eye a year or so earlier: he was effusive in his praise for the care he had received & his doctor, Dr. Marie Bui, in particular. I had been having significant trouble with my vision for a couple of years, especially night vision which was limiting my driving at night & other low light activities. I knew that I needed cataract surgery but vanity about getting an “old person’s surgery” kept me from doing the very thing that would improve my quality of life. After speaking with the park volunteer, I realized how foolish I was being & decided to take the plunge, so to speak. Based on his high recommendation for Austin Eye & Dr. Bui, I made an appointment for evaluation. My experience at Austin Eye easily matched that of the park volunteer: it was excellent in every aspect. Prior to my first visit I had watched a video made by Austin Eye which filmed Dr. Wong, one of the Austin Eye doctors, going through the procedure for getting cataract surgery. It was incredibly helpful to see his pre-op hemming & hawing about the procedure, the actual procedure itself, & his post-surgery care. This video is on YouTube & I highly recommend it to anyone considering cataract surgery – it is both informative & reassuring. I was impressed by the professionalism of the entire Austin Eye staff: from the front office staff, to the techs, nurses, & my doctor, Dr. Bui. Everyone was cordial & helpful, but most of all, there was no doubt that everyone knew their job & did it with obvious competence. Dr. Marie Bui is superb: she explained clearly the results of my evaluation, went carefully & thoroughly through the lens options & the expected outcomes from surgery, & she left plenty of time for any questions that I had – refreshingly, she was relaxed & didn’t give the impression that she wanted to rush on to the next patient. I had both eyes done, one week apart, and the surgery went as planned. Watching that video of Dr. Wong before surgery had been quite helpful in demystifying the actual surgery for me. The outcome was tremendous: the clarity of light, the colors – oh, the colors! I mentioned to my son that I felt like Lazarus after being raised from the dead. My son gently chided me for having waited so long to do something that was demonstrably in my own best interests. Austin Eye has a well deserved reputation for excellence in care. Dr. Bui was simply first rate & I am grateful for her skill as well as her bedside manner. There isn’t much good could that I can say about the COVID year with its lockdowns, but running into the unusually unhurried Big Bend National Park volunteer & chatting him up about cataract surgery sure was a stroke of COVID luck – thanks Bernie!
