Krista Stewart, MD – Bio

Dr. Stewart was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and received her undergraduate degree in molecular biology and medical degree with research honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She then completed ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, followed by an American Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowship at the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic. Following her training, Dr. Stewart joined Minnesota Eye Consultants, where her practice focused exclusively on oculoplastic surgery including reconstructive and cosmetic eyelid surgery, tear drain surgery and treatment of orbital disease. She also practiced at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where she cared for underserved patients and educated ophthalmology residents.  Dr. Stewart comes to Austin to join her husband who is a pediatric neurosurgeon at Dell Children’s Hospital.  They share 2 young children who always keep them on their toes.

Dr. Stewart has received many honors, awards and research grants throughout the course of her education, including the Marck Gichert Memorial Award in the Neurosciences from UW-Madison and the Michigan Ophthalmology Trainee Career Development Award. She was also selected for the American Association of Neurological Surgeon Medical Student Research Fellowship.  Her research interests and publications focus on regeneration of the central and peripheral nervous system, including the optic and corneal nerves.  She has served as a reviewer for multiple medical journals, has served as an editor for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Eyewiki pages and has written numerous academic book chapters.

Earlier in life, Dr. Stewart was a concert violinist, soloing in Carnegie Hall at the age of 15.  She suffered a chronic use nerve injury resulting in a career transition from music to medicine and ignited an interest in nerve regeneration.  Dr. Stewart chose to pursue oculoplastic surgery to meld both her more artistic and scientific sides.  She enjoys the fine detail work of oculoplastic surgery as well as the breadth of conditions and patients she treats in the field.

Dr. Stewart enjoys providing comprehensive, personalized and collaborative oculoplastic care to her patients.  She looks forward to working with her patients to achieve whatever their goals may be.

“Dr. Stewart is very thoughtful in her decision how to treat a patient’s diagnoses. Very kind and understanding of the patient’s wants and desired outcomes. Glad to have lucked out with her as a provider. I feel little pain after surgery and the sutures are some of the best I have ever seen. One of the nicest and communicative providers in any field I have seen. Thank you!”

“From the first time I saw Dr. Stewart she was amazing. Dr. Stewart broke news to me that I had lymphoma and she has been so wonderful and supportive. She promised me that she would reconstruct my lower lid once I completed treatment. She checks my follow up scans for me. She is personable and truly cares about her patients.
