Which Intraocular Lens Is Right for Me?

Choosing an IOLIf you have decided to undergo cataract surgery, you will soon need to pick an intraocular lens (IOL). An IOL replaces the eye’s natural, clouded lens, restoring your ability to see and improving your quality of life. Today’s IOLs vary in design and their ability to accommodate different visual needs. Austin Eye offers several IOLs with unique features. Read on to learn about our IOL options.

Monofocal

A traditional monofocal lens improves vision at a single focal point — either near, mid-range or far. A majority of our patients with monofocal lenses have excellent distance vision (e.g., to drive) and need to wear reading glasses to help with near vision (e.g., to read or use a computer).

AcrySof ReSTOR

The ReStor IOL is a type of multifocal lens designed to improve vision at multiple distances. With ReStor, patients experience a full range of clear vision without the need for reading glasses. ReStor lenses are commonly used for patients with presbyopia.

Tecnis Multifocal IOL

The Tecnis multifocal IOL provides good near, intermediate and distance vision, even in low-light conditions. Patients with Tecnis can also enjoy good computer vision and a decreased dependence on eye glasses.

Trulign Toric IOL

Like multifocal lens, toric IOLs can improve vision at multiple distances after cataract surgery. But unlike basic and multifocal lens, toric IOLs can also treat astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common eye condition that causes blurred vision and the distortion of images at all distances. Austin Eye uses the Trulign toric, an advanced IOL that can restore clear vision in patients with corneal astigmatism and/or lenticular astigmatism.

Crystalens AO

The Crystalens is an accommodating IOL, meaning it has the ability to focus like the eye’s natural lens, providing continuous vision far and near. The Crystalens IOL restores vision at all distances and in most cases reduces or eliminates the need for glasses and contacts for everyday tasks. People who use the computer several hours each day can also benefit from the excellent mid-range vision that the Crystalens provides.
