Light Adjustable Lens: Customizing Vision After Cataract Surgery

At Austin Eye in Austin, TX, we know your vision needs are as unique as you are. That’s why we offer the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), a breakthrough in cataract surgery technology that allows our cataract surgeons to fine-tune your vision after your procedure.

As the only intraocular lens that can be customized after it’s implanted, the LAL gives you a level of personalization that wasn’t possible before.

For five decades, Austin Eye Clinic has remained the premier center for cataract surgery in Central Texas. Led by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Shannon Wong, our team continues to bring the latest advancements to patients who want to enjoy clear, comfortable vision long after cataract removal. Read on to learn how the LAL is bringing the newest technology to vision correction after cataract surgery.

How the LAL Works

Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens of the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. Traditionally, that new lens is fixed in power: You can’t make adjustments after surgery.

But with the LAL, your vision can be adjusted after surgery using precise light treatments.

Here’s how it works:

  • After surgery, your eyes heal with the LAL in place.
  • You return for 3-8 visits over several weeks.
  • During these visits, your cataract surgeon uses special UV light treatments to adjust the lens power based on your feedback.
  • Once you reach your desired vision correction, the lens is “locked in,” and will remain at that power long term.

This approach allows for real-world testing of your vision and gives you control over the outcome. Whether you read a lot, drive frequently, or want the clearest distance vision possible, we can tailor the result to your lifestyle.

Setting Your Vision For Success

Most patients benefit from setting one eye (usually the dominant eye) for far to mid-range vision and the other eye for mid to near-range vision. This method, called blended vision, allows you to enjoy a wide range of focus with little to no need for glasses.

The LAL uses this technique with extended depth of focus (smooth transitions between near, mid, and far vision).

After treatment, you may notice that one eye sees better up close while the other sees better at a distance. Over time, your brain blends these inputs into sharp, seamless sight at all distances.

Another key benefit of the LAL is improved night vision. Patients often report reduced halos, glare, or starbursts compared to traditional lens options.
