Raindrop Near Vision Inlay for Presbyopia - Austin Eye

Presbyopia PatientAre you tired of wearing reading glasses? The majority of adults begin to have difficulty seeing clearly up close by age 40, a condition known as presbyopia. Everyday tasks, like reading a book or text message, become difficult without reading glasses. Presbyopia is a common aspect of getting older, regardless of whether you had a vision problem in the past.

At Austin Eye, we are committed to helping all patients regain their eyesight. We are pleased to offer a new and innovative solution to presbyopia and an alternative to reading glasses. The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, developed by Revision Optics, is a tiny lens that is inserted into the cornea with the goal of improving reading vision and reducing an individual’s dependence on reading glasses. We invite you to learn more about the Raindrop Inlay and how it can help you regain your eyesight.

What Is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible and more rigid. As a result, the natural lens loses its ability to adjust or bend in order to bring close objects into focus. Symptoms of presbyopia include blurred, fuzzy vision, a decreased ability to see near objects clearly, difficulty reading in dimly lit environments, eyestrain and headaches. Although there is no cure for presbyopia, it can be properly managed.

About Raindrop Inlay

The Raindrop Inlay, developed by Revision Optics, is a clear circular implant similar to a tiny (2 mm in diameter) contact lens. It is implanted just beneath the surface of the eye. The inlay is made of medical-grade hydrogel plastic similar to that used for soft contact lenses. The inlay works by gently reshaping the curvature of the cornea, allowing it to focus light entering the eye.

The Raindrop Inlay can be placed in a quick and simple procedure in our office. Similar to LASIK surgery, a laser is used to create a thin flap in the cornea. Once in place, the inlay adheres to the cornea and reshapes its curvature. The inlay is placed only in the non-dominant eye, and the two eyes work together to focus on objects at all distances.

The Raindrop Inlay is a proven safe and effective option for treating presbyopia. In a clinical trial, 92 percent of patients were able to see with 20/40 vision or better at near distances two years after implantation. Rare side effects include infection, inflammation, corneal scarring and swelling.
